For the Southern Sierra Miwuk people, who have inhabited this valley for centuries, the waterfall is known as "Pohono," meaning "Spirit of the Puffing Wind." This name refers to the consistent, powerful mist generated by the falling water, which the wind often blows sideways. Early American settlers later gave it the name "Bridalveil" due to its delicate, veil-like appearance when the flow is lighter.
