The Legend of the Petrified Trolls

The stone columns featured in the photograph are the Reynisdrangar sea stacks, which rise 66 meters(216 feet) out of the ocean just off the black sands of Reynisfjara. While geologists explain these columns as erosion-resistant basalt remnants, Icelandic folklore offers a more vivid origin story.

According to a popular local legend, these rock pillars were once trolls. The trolls attempted to drag a ship to shore during the night but were so intent on their task that they lost track of time. When the sun finally rose, its rays instantly petrified the trolls, turning them and the ship into the stark columns of rock that stand today. The powerful waves and swirling mists often seen around the stacks are said to be the trolls' eternal cries as they remain trapped at the water's edge. This photograph is a testament to the raw, untamed beauty of Iceland's south coast, capturing a legendary struggle between the dark stone giants and the relentless ocean.
