Jökulsárlón is a natural wonder formed by the retreat of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, an outlet of the vast Vatnajökull, Europe's largest ice cap. The glacial meltwater forms a lagoon, into which colossal icebergs calve and slowly drift toward the ocean. The unique coloration of the ice is a result of natural processes: the vibrant blue is caused by the way compressed ice absorbs light, while the black streaks are volcanic ash from past eruptions, trapped for centuries within the glacier.
